Time Dependent Volume Mass

Time Dependent Volume Mass (TDVM) allows the user to model the effects of a mass that can vary both in magnitude and in position.
It can be used to model filling of liquid into one or a set of tanks with specified geometry.
Free surface effects can then be accounted for. In this case, one TDVM may consist of up to 5 portions. Each portion has:

  • A simple geometry; Cone or Box (see figure below)

  • Its own location and orientation relative to the body (vessel)

A model of time varying volume mass is useful for simulation of operations involving ballasting or deballasting, such as heavy lift operations in general and in particular mating and platform removal operations.
Examples are a ballast tank that is emptied, or water that is moved from one tank to another, within a defined time period.
