Simplified Wave Drift Damping

A simplified model based on the derivatives of non-dimensional average wave drift forces with respect to relative velocity. The theory is described in Simplified Wave Drift Damping.

Input parameters are:

  • Period: Peak period in wave spectrum [s]

  • Wave drift damping coefficients for six degree of freedoms, (i.e. relative change in average wave drift force for unit velocity) [s/m]

    • Wd1: Wave drift damping coefficient in surge

    • Wd2: Wave drift damping coefficient in sway

    • Wd3: Wave drift damping coefficient in heave

    • Wd4: Wave drift damping coefficient in roll

    • Wd5: Wave drift damping coefficient in pitch

    • Wd6: Wave drift damping coefficient in yaw

This method uses a frequency-independent wave drift damping coefficient and should be used with care.
