Aerodynamic Load Models

There are various load models that can be used. These can be set in the Aerodynamic force coefficient tab in the cross sectional properties.

The following load models are available:

  • Drag

    • Morison-type quadratic aerodynamic drag based on the relative wind velocity. Use for structural elements such as pipes and cables exposed to wind where only drag forces are relevant. This is the simplest and most commonly used aerodynamic load model for non-lifting structures.

  • Airfoil

    • Aerodynamic loads based on interpolation from static lift, drag, and moment coefficient curves. Use for airfoil-shaped cross sections that are not part of a wind turbine, where both lift and drag contributions need to be accounted for.

  • Loads (Time domain VIV)

    • Aerodynamic loads including vortex-induced vibration effects. Use when VIV response is expected to be significant.

      This load model is currently under development.
      Aerodynamic VIV cannot be combined with hydrodynamic VIV load on the same cross section.
  • None

    • No aerodynamic loads are applied. This can be used for testing or when aerodynamic loads are negligible.
